Baby Shark has overtaken Despacito to become the most viewed video in YouTube’s history.

Puerto Rican popstars Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee held the record for more than three years with their global smash Despacito, which became the first video on the site to reach 7 billion views last month.

But the irritatingly catchy children’s rhyme Baby Shark, recorded by South Korean company Pinkfong, has ended Despacito’s 1,186 day run as the most watched video on YouTube.

The video for Baby Shark was originally uploaded in June 2016 and, although it was already popular in south-east Asia, it only began to go viral worldwide in the summer of 2018. The song even went on to spend 25 weeks in the UK top 40 singles chart.

On Monday morning (2nd November 2020), Baby Shark managed to overtake Despacito to become the most watched YouTube video of all time, and it continues to attract millions of views every day.
